Kyoto Fuka Fu Manju

Greetings from Kyoto

After partaking in some fine sake enjoyed with fine company at Madoka, the proprietor gave me a box of fu manju, a kind of Kyoto wagashi made from raw wheat gluten filled with sweet bean paste wrapped in sasa bamboo leaf. This delicacy comes from Madoka’s parent company, Fuka, a long established purveyor of fu (wheat gluten) in Kyoto. The sasa leaf imparts a delightful grassy flavor to the wet but firm manju confection.
