Kyoto photographer Kosuke Okuda and I teamed up to do an article for the Russian travel magazine Afisha Mir (Афиша-Мир). I just got a PDF of the article — hot off the server!

In the article I introduced the long history of Aritsugu which was founded in 1560. Aritsugu is one of the most famous makers of traditional Japanese knives and they are found in good kitchens all over Japan. We focused on the special eel bone cutting ‘honegiri’ knife that is used for the traditional Kyoto summer delicacy of ‘hamo’ pike eel. The knife is over 40 cm long, weighs more that 500 gm and costs more than $1,000 USD!

In Japan, there is a custom to send and give out the New Year greeting cards. This year, I’m making my New Year’s card with traditional Japanese paper called, ‘washi’.  (My father is a traditional washi papermaker.) I make them individually, one by one, which is a lot of work, taking much time and effort. However, I have a lot of fun to send these New Year’s cards made with washi, because they are rare, even in Japan. The decorative motif of the card is Japanese auspicious symbols and things people eat and drink during the Japanese New Year’s celebration.My photo studio is called Shorokusha, and the characters in the name include ‘pine’ and ‘deer’. So, I included a deer standing next to a pine tree as one of the icons.
