Kosuke Okuda

I grew up on Awaji Island, in the Seto Inland Sea. My father is a traditional Japanese washi paper maker there. While growing up, I often helped him harvesting and processing kozo fiber and crafting paper. Now we do collaborative works using his washi paper and my photography.

I moved to Kyoto when I was a university student studying design and photography and have loved this unique and historic city since.

I apprenticed with a famous photographer in Tokyo for three years and learned to do advertising, fashion and beauty related photography. While at this studio I was put in charge of product photography.

After I returned to Kyoto, I opened my photography studio called, Shorokusha. I do a wide range of photography -- sightseeing, food, restaurant and accommodation interiors, concert performances, fashion and beauty and so on.

My photography was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal, which published a photo essay of the Gozan Okuribi fire festival, an historic late-summer Kyoto custom.

I am very eager to work with writers and publishers overseas on stories about Kyoto and Japan's unique culture.
