This was a surprise! This morning, in my garden I noticed a morel mushroom. I have never seen one in my little Kyoto garden before. I then noticed a second one.
At a mountainside temple in Oyamazaki (on the outskirts of Kyoto), one spring I found a few and took them home and prepared them the way I learned as a kid in Minnesota – sauteed with butter and salt and pepper.
I decided not to pick these, for now at least. I am hoping they will spread their spores in my garden. But, I don’t think it is that simple with fungi. Oh well, it was a nice surprise, and on my birthday!
