    Dear footmarks,

I am very sorry for the late reply. I was not sure what you should not miss in Oct, so I asked Chef Tanigawa from Kichisen.

He says Matsutake mushroom tastes the best around that time. Their smell is very unique and special, so Japanese just love them!

Matsutake will be served a lot of Japanese restaurant in Kyoto,in different ways; they will be found in soup or rice very often. Cheap ones are imported ones.

Kichisen kaiseki restaurant serves cut mushroom, you cook over charcoal at your table. That would be something special.

There are no particularly seasonal event at that time, but 25th Tenjin Market at Kitano tenmamgu will be interesting.

    Hello!

You should be able to find porter bags at many places. The biggest collection would be KURA CHIKA Kyoto shop, on the 2nd floor in Fujii Daimaru department store. It is where Teramachi st. and Shijo st. meet.

I remember seeing their bags at Takashimaya department store, and at LOFT(shopping building).

They are all close together, so you can easily go the three on foot.

    Hello ezencia,

If you are coming to Kyoto that time and hasn’t booked accommodation or restaurant, please make reservation as soon as possible. I used to work in Ryokan, and I know that people who come to Kyoto on new years day book for the next year when they leave Kyoto.

Hello! I don’t quite understand what you mean by persimmon-shape.

This is ceramic one of those conventional shape, that you can easily get at 100 yen stores.

I found cute one, not sure if this is hand made, though.

If this is what you are looking for, you could image search with おろし器. (oroshi-ki)

Or am I looking for wrong thing?

    I see!

I haven’t heard of this brand, but I read through the info and it sounded very nice. This is something you eat with rice. You can chop them into fine pieces and mix with cucumber slices as well, but it is best to eat with rice.

It is seaweed, that had been cooked with soy sauce and sugar and sake and mirin, and then dried. It is salty. The product has got some kind of governmental prize twice, so that the quality is promised, I think.

Why don’t you give it a try?

Oh, and I also like うるしの常三郎 (Urushi no Tsunezaburou) store.

They have several stores in Kyoto. The most convenient one is on Ponto-cho street, on west side of the street, closer to Shijo-street end. They have reasonably priced lacquerware.

Hello, I am sorry for not replying sooner.

I think the lacquerware store you are talking about is Shikki no Asobe store.(漆器のアソベ). The store used to be facing Shijo street, but they have MOVED to Shijo Higashinotoin-sagaru, which is south from Shijo-street X Higashinotoin-street crossing.

They are still doing business, of course; it is a really popular shinise store, that has started in 1807.

    Hello bambootrance-san,

I think it is easier to find large size on line stores.

Some of rain shoes have size up to XL and 25.

    http://www.bath-ec.com/rain070612.html

and the below is the online store for large size clothing and accessories,

    Nissen

I could not find rain boots, but they might be on sale soon.

I will post when I find more websites.

Hello, I found a good URL that introduces seasonal food.

    http://www.nice-body.jp/diet/syokuzai/index.html

Some of those food are available all year now, but they taste really different in the right season.

Those autumn food below are typically autumn food; it is difficult to get year around.

chestnuts, saury, gingko nuts, matsutake mushroom and nashi pear……

    Unagi

    Kaneyo

As for unagi, I think Kaneyo is reasonably priced for eel cuisine.

    Matsuno

Other places I know is more expensive. Matsuno, is famous. They have english website, so please have a look.

    http://www.matsuno-co.com/gion_matsuno.html

    Uokeya

Uokeya in Gion is very famous. I haven’t been there, but the location is really good and is run by a famous restaurant group, Yagenbori, that has good reputation. This restaurant was a favorite of the American artist Clifton Karhu who lived most of his adult life in Kyoto. His woodblock prints decorate the restaurant.

Their dinner sets starts from 6,300 yen and reservation is needed.

    Hello,

    Yuba

    Komameya Yuba

I like Komameya Yuba restaurant, their yuba donburi is very good. They have another branch in the north side of Daimaru department store. I have tried 3,000 yen course and 5,000 yen course. 3,000 yen was so-so and 5,000 yen course was really good.

    http://kyotofoodie.com/komameya-yuba-ryori-lunch/

    http://www.ueda-yuba.co.jp/

    Yubasen

I also like Yubasen, on Gojo-zaka street, which is very near Kiyomizu temple. You can eat very very fresh yuba for reasonable price. You can see how they are made, and by appointments, you can even experience to make yourself.

    Seike

If you would like to enjoy Yuba being served as Kaiseki food, Seike is a good place to go. Nishijin branch, which I haven’t been there, seems to have very good Nishijin machiya-stlye building and atmosphere, It is south of Imadegawa street and Omiya street intersection. Lunch starts from 2,800 yen and dinner starts from 7,350 yen. Yuba is not so expensive to make, so I think that you could be paying much for the atmosphere too.

We are sorry that we did not reply soon enough! I hope you found something nice to make your hamentaschen in Japan.

I am afraid that I don’t actually know anywhere you can buy hand made koshian….. There are many confectionary stores in Kyoto, but I can not think of anywhere they sell koshian itself.

My favorite anko is from Gozasoro, Obanyaki shop.

    http://www.gozasoro.co.jp/goods/index.html

You can get them from Takashimaya and Isetan department store food court. They sell a pack of tsubu-an, but not koshi-an.

If you have a chance, please try. They are only 80 yen and really yummy!
